How to Repair and Waterproof a Leaking Caravan or Motorhome Roof

A leaking caravan or motorhome roof can spoil a trip and, if left unattended, allow water to damage the interior. The first step is to identify the affected areas and make sure the roof is suitable for coating. With thorough preparation and correct application, Eterna-Kote® Silicone Roof Coating forms a continuous waterproofing membrane over a properly prepared compatible roof surface.

This guide explains how to estimate the amount of coating required, prepare the roof, deal with existing repairs and seams, and apply Eterna-Kote.

Why consider Eterna-Kote for a caravan or motorhome roof?

Eterna-Kote is a one-coat silicone coating system designed to simplify roof waterproofing – unlike other systems that may require a separate primer or several topcoats.

  • One-coat silicone application system
  • No separate undercoat required
  • Reduces the materials, labour and time involved compared with multi-coat systems
  • Bright white, high-gloss finish – Cool Roof Coating
  • Lifetime manufacturer warranty, subject to the applicable warranty terms

How much Eterna-Kote will you need?

Measure the roof length and width and calculate the total area. As a guide, one litre covers approximately 1.76–2 m², depending on the substrate. Actual coverage can vary with surface texture, condition and application. Use the product instructions to confirm the amount needed and make sure you have enough coating to complete the job.

Step 1 — Clean the roof thoroughly

Waterblast the roof to remove dirt, grime, chalking and loose material. Allow it to dry completely. The surface must be clean, dry and sound before coating.

Step 2 — Inspect the roof and previous repairs

Check old repairs, sealants and damaged areas. Scrape away material that is loose or failing. Do not coat over a repair that is already failing; resolve the underlying issue and prepare the surface first.

Step 3 — Check any existing EternaBond® tape

Do not apply Eterna-Kote directly to EternaBond tape, as it will not adhere directly to that plastic surface. If the tape is firmly attached and in good condition, apply Black Jack® Waterproofing & Seam Tape over it, then paint Eterna-Kote over the Black Jack tape. Remove loose, lifting, damaged or failing EternaBond and prepare the surface underneath.

Step 4 — Reinforce seams and flexible joints

Apply Black Jack® Waterproofing & Seam Tape to flexible seams, joints and areas that need additional reinforcement. Eterna-Kote can then be applied over the tape.

Step 5 — Take care around plastic vents and fittings

Do not assume Eterna-Kote will adhere directly to plastic. Where appropriate, stop the coating before the plastic edge or use Black Jack tape to create a suitable surface for the coating.

Step 6 — Remove contaminants and let the roof dry

Remove any remaining cleaning chemicals, detergents, oils or other contaminants. Confirm that the roof is completely clean and dry before application.

Step 7 — Mask the edges

Use masking tape along roof edges and around areas where you want a clean finish.

Step 8 — Open the container only when needed

Eterna-Kote is a moisture-cure silicone. Remove the amount needed and replace the lid immediately. Do not leave the container open unnecessarily, because atmospheric moisture begins curing the product. Keep the container sealed between uses and follow the product storage instructions.

Step 9 — Coat detailed areas first

Use a brush or roller on seams and joins, taped areas, vertical sections, vents, skylights, roof penetrations and other detailed areas. Ensure the product is applied as directed around each detail.

Step 10 — Allow the first application to dry

Allow approximately 3–4 hours for the first application to dry, depending on weather and site conditions.

Step 11 — Coat the whole roof

Pour the coating onto the roof and spread it with a 19 mm nap rough-exterior roller suitable for multipurpose paints. Apply evenly and maintain a wet edge as you work. Eterna-Kote will self-level and produce a bright white, high-gloss finish.

Step 12 — Check the weather and curing conditions

Check the forecast before starting and allow suitable conditions for application and curing. Do not apply to a wet roof.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Underestimating the quantity of coating required
  • Applying to a wet, dirty or contaminated roof
  • Coating over loose or failed repairs
  • Applying Eterna-Kote directly to EternaBond tape
  • Assuming the coating will adhere directly to plastic fittings
  • Leaving the container open longer than necessary
  • Rushing roof preparation or ignoring the weather forecast
